The Verma family are spending an evening at home Mrs.Verma is mending some clothes, Ranjan is reading a journal, Mr. Verma is reading newspaper , Reena has her hair up in rollers.

Vikram Why is everyone so quiet? Didi, why do you put on these curlers? You look awful.

Reena Don’t be rude Viki. These are rollers and not curlers. My hair look nice when I take them off. I have to look smart at my job as a receptionist at Rama’s store. In any case, everyone ought to dress tidily and look as attractive as possible. You, Viki, should wipe your face, so that it doesn’t shine so much.

Mr.Verma Ranjan, how are you getting along with your course as a Management Trainee at Technical Sales?

Ranjan We’ve finished a year of traning. We’ve learnt about marketing and management. Now for the next year we have to work in the office and do field work as well. I think I’ am getting along quite well.

Reena Papa, you do not seem to have much touring to do in your new job?

Mr.Verma I am now working in the Head office of Government Steel Traders. It is only in the branch offices that a lot of touring has to be done to visit all the dealers in the district.

Mrs.Verma Vikram. Have you done your homework?

Vikram Yes, mamma, I finished it right after lunch. From tomorrow I am not going out to play in the afternoons. I have to study for my final exams for class IV.

Mrs.Verma All right, everyone let’s play a game before we have dinner for half an hour.

Vikram What shall we play? Can we play football?

Reena No silly, how can we play football in the sitting room? Let's play a gussing game.

Mr.Verma O.K. I’ll think of a thing in this room and you’ve got to guess what it is. All right?

Vikram But you must give us clues.

Mr.Verma Right. The thing is a word with eight letters and the first letter is “c”.

Reena What’s it made of? Is it wood or steel or cloth?

Mr.Verma It is made of cloth.

Vikram What colour is it? Blue, green, black, white or brown?

Mr.Verma None of these colors.

Mrs.Verma Is it red?

Mr.Verma That’s right, it is red.

Ranjan What is it used for?

Mr.Verma For covering.

Vikram Is it a cupboard?

Mr.Verma No little fellow. A cupboard is not make of cloth and it is not of a red colour, is it?

Vikram Then, is it a carpet?

Mr.Verma No, carpet has only six letters in it.

Reena I know. It is 'curtains'.

Mr.Verma That’s right you’re clever girl, Reena.

Vikram Now, I’ll think of a word and you all guess what it is?

Mrs.Verma We’ll continue after dinner. I’ll get the dinner now. You must all go to bed early. Tomorrow is another working day for all of you.

Ranjan O.K.Vikram, guess what one wall said to another wall?

Vikram I know that one. One wall said to the other wall.” Meet me at the corner”.

Ranjan What did one picture say to the another?

Vikram “First they framed me and now they’ve hung me.”

Reena (Ringing the bell). Dinner is served.

(C) Study the following responses

1 Where are the various members of the Verma family working?
Responses:
Mr.Verma himself appears to be working for a company called Government steel Traders. Ranjan is an Executive Trainee at technical sales and Reena is a receptionist at Rama’s store.

2 It is a pity that with the whole family going out to work and with Vikram at school, Mrs.Verma too does not find a Job.
Responses:
Mrs.Verma is the only one who stays at home. Though she may not lead a very glamorous life but she brings a sense of security to the household by her constant presence in the house. The household would not run so smoothly and happily, if it were left to the servants to run it in any way they liked.
